Well
we got several tasks started and one very close to being
finished.
The one that got started took us further away from a
running Jeep, but in the long run will be a step in the
right direction. The AMC ignition box is notorious for
being bad, and the computer controlled carburetor is
notorious for running bad and being a real polluter. The
solution is to remove the computer and the ignition box,
replace the carborator with a Weber. The removal of the
ignition box is called "Nuttering" and is detailed here
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/how-nutter-bypass-522262/
There are
a number of Jeeps out there that have tried to pass
emissions with the stock setup and have not been able to
, done this modification and passed with flying colors.
As my Jeep is registered as a Historical vehicle and has
no OBDII connector, NY only does a visual inspection of
the vehicle and I will pass. Below is what the engine
compartment looked like with all the computer wiring and
senors. |

 |
 |
The dash needs to be removed to
get to the computer. It also has to be removed because
the heat core is leaking and I want to do the blower
motor upgrade. |
Now
you see it now you don't |
 |
 |
We
worked our way across unplugging and unscrewing sensors.
We did not have to cut one wire, the whole harness was
removed in tack with all the vacuum connections,
electrical sensors and wiring connections. The whole
thing can be reinstall at some future date if desired.
The whole operation took less than 2 hours. |
 |
 |
 |
The whole thing will be put away
so that if needed it can be reinstalled. |
 |
 |
 |
Now we are ready for the next
step, the Weber conversion. This is done so often that
Weber actually sells a conversion kit. |
The next task was to install
the transfer case (see
here
for the story on why it was removed) |
 |
The first stumbling block was the transmission to
transfer case gasket. No one seems to have it. I was
sent this one by both Quadratec and
Coiz
and
they are the wrong ones. Jeep dealers have discontinued
it so when all else fails. Make it yourself. Lay it out,
use a small ballpien hammer and tap around the edge and
you have it. |
 |
 |
I replaced the seals around
the shift rods, removed the transfer case adapter and
replace the oil seal in that also. Used an extension and
four wheel hub socket, turned around as a seal driver. |
 |
 |
 |
Next was putting the shift lever back on, the plastic
bushings were supplied by
Coiz
in a pay it forward move. THANKS |
 |
It works! I now can shift 4H 2H N 4L |
 |
In she goes, I hope it stays there for awhile. |
 |
 |
 |
Well that is all I can do for now. Quadratec has done it
to me again. I ordered an new transmission mount. Asked
if it was in stock. Sure. It did not come. Called. Oh it
is being shipped direct from the manufacturer, it should
be there on Monday. Deceiving at best. Had I been told
that I would have ordered from someone that had it that
was closer so that I could have completed this task this
weekend. |
