Time to take it further apart. I want to powder coat the axle housing so it has the be completely stripped. These backing plates are really ugly anyway.

Remember, take lots of pictures so you can put it back the way it came apart. 


I get asked this question a lot. How do you remove the bushings from the axle housing. I grind of the lip of the bushing and then use a ball joint push the bushing out.

Bushing removal / differences on the rear end

 

Here is a picture of the bushing pushed as far out as it will go with the ball joint press. Now just a few taps with an air chisel and the bushing falls out.

 

A little sand blasting to clean up the housing before taking it to be powder coated (it does not fit in my oven)

 

New parts are arriving. I will have to repaint these to the correct blue-gray color. (El Caminos came from the factory with rear air shock)
